Biotechnology Definitions

-

Biotechnology refers to the industrial use of genetically engineered microorganisms such as bacteria or biological substances such as enzymes. Although biotechnology seems new, it has been around for centuries and has been used to produce food (i.e. bread) and beverages (i.e. beer and milk products) and in our modern age, drugs and synthesized hormones. Today, biotechnology has also been used to genetically alter bacteria for use with the cleanup of oils spills, to recycle garbage, treat waste, cleanup sites contaminated by industrial activities (bioremediation). Modern biotechnology is often associated with the use of genetically altered microorganisms such as E. coli or yeast for the production of 'recombinant' substances like insulin or antibiotics. Many pharmaceutical companies use biotechnology to develops and manufacture pharmaceutical products to treat patients with unmet medical needs.
